Connecting Cities. Enabling Intelligence. Shaping the Future.

Chairman’s Message | October 2026 Newsletter

It is my pleasure, as Chairman of the Smart City Committee of Fiber Connect Council MENA, to introduce our November 2026 Newsletter, highlighting significant smart-city developments across the Middle East, North Africa, and Southern Europe.

We are witnessing a fundamental transformation in how cities are planned, connected, managed, and operated. Artificial intelligence, digital twins, intelligent mobility, smart utilities, and integrated urban platforms are moving beyond individual technology deployments toward connected, data-driven urban ecosystems.

At the heart of this transformation lies a fundamental enabler: resilient, high-capacity fiber-optic infrastructure.

Fiber connectivity is no longer simply a telecommunications utility. It is becoming an essential component of urban infrastructure, supporting the integration of intelligent systems, real-time data exchange, operational resilience, and the delivery of increasingly sophisticated digital services.

This edition brings together 18 noteworthy developments across 13 countries, illustrating how governments, municipalities, infrastructure operators, and technology providers are translating smart-city ambitions into tangible initiatives.

Through the Smart City Committee, our ambition is to strengthen the connection between digital infrastructure investment and measurable urban outcomes, promote knowledge exchange and collaboration across the region, and encourage interoperable, sustainable, and future-ready smart-city architectures.

Our focus must move beyond connecting buildings, devices, and systems toward connecting infrastructure, intelligence, institutions, and people.

I invite our Council members, industry partners, public authorities, and smart-city professionals to explore this edition, share their experiences, and contribute to building the next generation of connected, intelligent, sustainable, and resilient cities.

The future of smart cities will not be defined by technology alone, but by how intelligently we connect and integrate it to improve urban life.

Dr. Houssam AlMasri
