The FTTH Conference, spanning three days from March 19th to 21st in Berlin, hosted a diverse range of activities, including 24 workshops covering topics such as FTTH-enabled products, services solutions, and regulatory issues. Notable participants included companies like Trimble, Adchina, AVM, IQGEO, Genixis, and Omelcom, among others. With over 3,300 delegates in attendance, more than 180 speakers, and 120 exhibitors and partners, the conference provided a comprehensive platform for industry engagement and knowledge exchange.
Dr. Alaa J. Mousa, President of the Fiber Connect Council MENA and CEO of EarthLink Telecommunications, delivered a keynote address outlining the FTTH status in the Middle East and North Africa region. His presentation covered strategic approaches to FTTH deployment, challenges faced, and the expansion of FTTH coverage across the region. Highlighting the significant growth in FTTH home pass and subscribers since 2012, Dr. Mousa underscored Iraq's notable progress, transitioning from less than 25% to more than 25% and less then 60% coverage. He also discussed emerging trends and changes in the MENA Fiber Market, such as the adoption of fixed 5G broadband networks and Smart City concepts in urban planning.
Despite advancements, the MENA fiber market confronts several challenges. Disruptions in the global supply chain, inflation, and increased raw material prices have posed significant obstacles. Region-specific issues, including foreign currency limitations, civil unrest, and intense competition, further impact operator returns. Moreover, adapting to new monetization opportunities while contending with legacy technologies like satellite TV presents ongoing complexities.
The event concluded with a dynamic exhibition showcasing the latest innovations from over 120 exhibitors, spanning startups to industry giants. As winning companies were celebrated and future FTTH technologies were explored, attendees departed with a renewed understanding of the ever-evolving landscape of fiber optics and digital connectivity. With insights gained and connections forged, the conference served as a catalyst for future collaborations and advancements in the field, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards a more connected and digitally empowered world.
