As demand for network capacity continues to grow, innovation in fiber density becomes increasingly important. Council member Corning has expanded its high-density cable portfolio with Contour Form™ Micro Cable, a new 432-fiber micro cable built on its Contour™ 190-micron fiber platform.

More fiber in the same space

Compared with Corning's 432-fiber MiniXtend® HD Cable, Contour Form Micro Cable offers:

  • Up to 28% smaller cable diameter: 7.8 mm instead of 10.8 mm.
  • 50% more fiber in the same space: 432 fibers fit the 10 mm micro duct previously needed for a 288-fiber cable.
  • Almost twice the fiber density: 9.0 fibers per mm² instead of 4.7.

Built on Contour fiber

The compact design is enabled by Corning® Contour™ fiber. Its 190 µm outer diameter gives a 40% smaller cross-section than 242 µm fiber, with improved bend resilience for high-density environments. The cable uses reduced-diameter buffer tubes with loose Contour fibers, so installers work with a familiar design.

It comes in 288- and 432-fiber counts, fitting 8 mm and 10 mm inner-diameter micro ducts respectively.

Where it is used

Contour Form Micro Cable is designed for metro and long-haul data center interconnect and for fiber-to-the-home networks. Operators can place 50% more fiber in the same micro duct, or move to a smaller duct, scaling within existing infrastructure without disturbing the surrounding environment. The cable is optimized for air-assisted installation, placing fiber faster and over longer distances than traditional pulling.
